Allir kennararnir hafa a.m.k. 20 ára starfsreynslu en meirihluti þeirra hefur kennt í 30–40 ár.
Í þeim reyndu kennurum sem tóku þátt í rannsókninni eru fólgin tækifæri. Þetta eru kennarar sem eru áhugasamir og virkir og forystuaðilar í faglegu starfi skólans. Niðurstöðurnar sýna jafnframt að þörf er á að efla aðild kennara að sýn, stefnu og ákvörðunum innan skólans. Í ljósi þeirra breytinga sem orðið hafa á starfsháttum kennara þarf að koma á markvissum stuðningi og endurgjöf til reyndra kennara. Leggja þarf áherslu á aðstæður þar sem kennurum og stjórnendum gefast tækifæri til þess að ígrunda saman og leita nýrra leiða með það að markmiði að bæta árangur nemenda. Þar fylgjast stjórnendur með kennslu kennara og kennarar fylgjast með kennslu hvers annars. Til þess að þetta geti orðið að veruleika er skólastjórinn lykilmaður að mati kennara.
Af niðurstöðum má draga þá ályktun að ástæða sé að efla markvissan stuðning og endurgjöf frá samkennurum og stjórnendum innan skólanna til þess að hægt sé að nýta verkstjórnarþáttinn betur og skólinn dragist nær lærdómssamfélaginu. Vonast er eftir því að niðurstöðurnar auki skilning stjórnenda og fræðsluyfirvalda á mikilvægi þessa þáttar fyrir starfsþróun reyndra kennara og faglegt starf skóla.

All teachers in compulsory schools in Iceland must carry out tasks assigned to them by the principal in addition to their teaching duties. The time allocated is 9,14 hours per week. Older teachers may choose to reduce their teaching load and instead carry out additional tasks identified by the principal. The aim of this study is to look at the benefits and disadvantages of this arrangement as perceived by experienced teachers and their principals.
A qualitative study was conducted, based on semi-structured interviews with 11 interviewees, thereof eight compulsory school teachers from three schools and three principals. All teachers have at least 20 years of teaching experience but most of them have 30-40 years experience. The interviews focused on the reduction in teaching hours and experience of taking on tasks assigned by the principal. The nature of the tasks selected by the principals and teacher attitudes towards them are considered. Furthermore the potential contribution of older teachers to a professional learning community within the school is discussed.
The results indicate that there are opportunities for some teachers in carrying out additional tasks. These teachers are interested and active and are leaders within professional development activities in their school. It is important to improve the participation of teachers in defining the school´s vision and in decision making. There is a need for goal oriented support and feedback to experienced teachers in light of their changing responsibilities. With student performance in mind, teachers and leaders need an environment where they can think things through together and search for new methods to increase student achievement. It would be useful for school leaders to visit teachers in action in the classroom and fellow teachers could do the same. According to the teachers the principal is the key person in supporting a professional learning community (PLC).
The results show that there is a need to strengthen goal oriented support and feedback from fellow teachers and school leaders so the school would get closer to being a PLC. It is hoped that the study will increase the understanding of administrators of the need for support and advice to experienced teachers and their possible contribution to professional development in schools.
