Around 1788, Mozart’s life was at its lowest point. As is frequently noted, an artist’s personal life is reflected in his oeuvres. Mozart’s last Piano Concerto, composed about two years earlier than its catalogue date of 1791, encompasses profound experimentations in the concerto as well as the general classical style. While details in the development of the first movement reflect more of Mozart’s virtuous Masonic side, the overall mood reflects the melancholy of the personal and financial difficulties Mozart was experiencing. Expanding beyond the traditional form and style, the composition can be viewed as an introspective reflection of Mozart the man, in other words a personal statement.
