Markmiðið var að reikna út heildar vistferilskostnað (e. total life cycle cost (TLCC)) fyrir vetnisstöðina ásamt kostnaði við að framleiða kíló af vetni með jöfnuðu orkuverði (e. levelized cost of energy (LCOE)). Líftíminn var á bilinu 5 til 20 ár.

Global warming has become an unequivocal problem where the effects are evident in warmer temperature, rising sea levels and melting of glaciers. The main reason is considered anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A means to mitigate the GHG emissions has been to implement new state of the art renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy. Those technologies entail a problem linked to their energy output and as the production is intermittent it is not able to meet the constant energy demand. A possible solution to this problem is to produce hydrogen from excess energy and re-electrify via fuel cells during low production days or use for mobility purposes replacing conventional fossil fuels. In this study a life cycle cost (LCC) analysis is carried out for a decentralized hydrogen refueling station that links renewable energy to material handling vehicles by water electrolysis. This study is carried out within the context of a case study as a research method and utilizes LCC as the main methodology. The goal was to calculate the total life cycle cost (TLCC) and the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) based on the functional unit kg. The selected lifetime ranged from 5 to 20 years.
