    Abstract
This study aims to preserve the history of the project Tónlist fyrir alla (e. Music for Everyone) and to examine whether it influenced musical performance and the development of musical life in Kópavogur. More specifically, it asks whether live musical performances impacted participant children and teenagers and whether regular concerts in elementary schools played a role in students’ social development, encouraged empathetic behavior and strengthened the school community. The thesis departs from the observation that music cannot be divorced from its larger social context and that the social environment therefore plays a role in how people experience and react to music. It incorporates insights from research on the changing role of music in daily life and new modes of listening following the rise of digital music consumption.
Tónlist fyrir alla set out to grant all elementary students in Kópavogur the opportunity to experience live performances of various kinds of music from an early age. Moreover, to encourage engaged listening and active participation.
The thesis adopts a qualitative research design to analyse documents from the Kópavogur Municipal Library as well as interviews with 11 individuals that participated in the project Tónlist fyrir alla in one way or another. Their experiences, reactions and views inform the conclusions of the study.
Thematic coding of the interviews suggests that Tónlist fyrir alla impacted both students and teachers, in spite of the fact that the music it highlighted was often both avant garde or drawn from less known musical cultures. Moreover, that the intimate setting of the concerts and instructive discussion of the music performed rendered classical and avant garde music more accessible and attenuated prejudices. The interviews also reveal that the school community was generally open minded about this project, which required breaks from regular teaching plans or leaving the schoolgrounds to attend concerts. What is more, the project granted teachers and other staff the opportunity for further education and new experiences, much like the students. The interview subjects agreed that it is important for children and teenagers to have the chance to listen to music that they may not choose themselves or have ready access to. The study also suggests that Tónlist fyrir alla played a role in Kópavogur municipality’s decision to build the Salurinn concert hall, the first dedicated facility of its kind in Iceland. Furthermore, that it was important for students to get to enjoy the arts and artistic experiences regardless of economic class. Thus, elementary schools, a key site of mandatory education, offer an ideal platform to guarantee students’ access to cultural experiences and participation in the arts, no matter what their family conditions and economic background are.
