The aim of the study is to explore the experience of those who have been raised with a sibling that have misused drugs. Studies have shown that problems related to substance abuse affect family members in different ways, depending on the position of each individual within the family. Such difficulties within families can cause unstable and distorted communication patterns within the family as well as in their social environment. Non-addict siblings tend to be ignored in the chaos created when parents are overwhelmed by problems arising from substance abuse by one of their children, and might therefore experience anger, sadness and a longing for a previous family life. The purpose of this study is to increase awareness about the experiences of children with addicted siblings and the effect the substance abuse has on them and their families. In addition the goal of the study was to explore which kind of support and advice have proven the most helpful to children coping with a substance addicted sibling. Ten semi-standardized interviews were taken with adults who grew up with an addict sibling and they were asked about their experiences relating to the sibling and the substance abuse. The following factors were explored: a) physical and mental well-being in childhood, b) siblings-, family and friendships, c) education and jobs, and d) which coping strategies have proven successful for them. The results of this study showed that the siblings experienced family crisis and an increased amount of stress within the family. Furthermore that addicts‘ families seemed to need support and counseling to understand their situation where the did not seem to have the capability to work through their emotions. The results support previous studies that have shown that family conflict and domestic violence can be connected to substance abuse among children/teenagers and can impact the social behavior and mental health of their siblings. The primary importance of the study is to shed light on the community problems relating to substance abuse from the perspective of non-addicted siblings. The results indicate that children with substance addicted siblings require support and counseling. They also tend to be ignored and forgotten since the main focus of the family seems to be usually more often on the child with addiction problems.
