Stress is a common problem among university students around the world and studies indicate higher levels of stress among students compared to the general public. Chronic stress can have adverse effects on physical and mental health and there are indications of a strong connection between stress and psychological distress among university students.
The purpose of this study was to explore: 1) Students‘ mean stress score on the PSS stress scale, 2) correlation between stress scores and students‘ evaluation of their physical and mental health, 3) students‘ coping strategies and correlation between stress and risk behavior, 4) correlation between stress scores and background variables, 5) correlation between stress scores and academic stress, 6) students‘ need for professional mental health services and the most common obstacles to seeking help.
The study design was descriptive, quantitative, and cross-sectional. An online questionnaire was sent to all students enrolled at the University of Iceland during the spring semester 2016. The questionnaire consisted of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) in addition to questions about psysical and mental health, background variables, academic stress, and coping strategies. The final sample consisted of 419 undergratuate students; primarily female, aged 20-24, childless and employed parttime.
The results of the study revealed that participants‘ mean stress score was 20.6, which was found to be significantly higher than general population. Increased stress scores correlated with worse evaluation of physical and mental health. Students with high stress scores were significantly more likely to use maladaptive coping strategies, e.g. smoking, compared to students with low stress scores. No significant differences were found in stress scores in relation to gender, marital status and part-time employment. Among participants who had children, there was a positive correlation between stress scores and number of children in the home. Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between stress scores on PSS and academic stress. Nearly half of the participants considered themselves in need of professional mental health services and this group also had significantly higher stress scores. The most common obstacle preventing participants from seeking help was high cost.
The results demonstrate the importance of developing affordable and accessible support programs for university students dealing with stress and psychological distress. Registered nurses are in a key position to develop and provide such programs, which could be based on cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness training, and teaching students adaptive coping strategies.
