Titill:

  • The author observes at the beginning that the traditional method of identifying political parties on the traditional scale of left and right had its origin in the Estates-General in France in the 18th century.
Of late, the political positions of individual parties have begun to traverse the traditional left-right values, and new political directions have emerged in many countries that are difficult to place on the left-right scale.
This also applies to the new political party in Iceland, the Pirates, that has attracted a very large following despite not having clearly spelled out its position in the same detail as other, older political parties.
The author therefore poses the research question where the Pirates can be placed in the political spectrum and inquires in detail where they can be identified on the basis of their own policy postures in comparison with other Icelandic political parties.
The author grades the political parties on a scale of minus 2.5 to the left and plus 2.5 on the right and assigns grades to positions of individual parties, including the Pirates, along that scale.
Such grades are assigned purely on the basis of the subjective assessment of the author, based on the policy platforms of the parties. This assessment is then summarized in order to identify the position of the parties on a left-to-right scale.
It comes as no surprise that the parties line up with the Left Greens furthest on the left and the Independence Party furthest to the right. A close inspection of the policy statements of the Pirates places them somewhere in the middle, leaning slightly to the left.
The shortcoming of this analysis is that the Pirates have not taken positions on important issues, such as in foreign affairs, which makes it difficult to place them precisely in the political spectrum.
