The focus of this thesis is the necessary condition for an informed publicdiscourse. It addresses the importance of public discourse for democracy and how the academics and people working within the mass media should participate in it. The conclusion of the analysis is that the roles of both these groups are of crucial importance for an active democratic society. For more depth on the topic, the case of the Icelandic financial crisis in 2008 was specifically explored and explained how and why the mass media, as well as the academics, failed their roles in the prelude of the crisis. In the thesis it is discussed how special interest group have tried to undermined informed public debate and discourse by trying to influence the academics and the media, both before and after the financial crisis. The argue is that this is a part of Icelandic society that has not been sufficiently dealt with, and there are still forces within society that try to discourage and undermine informed public debate. It is also argued that without accepting this fact the Icelandic nation will never succeed in building a society different from the one it had before the crisis of 2008, an active democratic society with a strong academia and a strong media environment.
