Tourism is a growing industry in this country with an increasing number of employees in the field. Research has shown that the attitudes and focus of the management are both related to success of the services as well as employee satisfaction and welfare. Few studies exist on the attitudes of employees in the tourism industry in this country. The purpose of the research is to examine the attitudes and beliefs of the employees on their own work and to the management methods of their superiors in the tourism industry in this country. Special emphases was made on revealing whether or not the tourism services in Iceland use servant leadership by surveying the attitudes and experiences of employees on management and leadership. Six employees of tourism
services in this country were interviewed. Individual interviews were conducted with the participans and the interviews analyzed with interpretive diagnosis and themes were produced. The results of the study indicate that the management methods of companies in the tourism industry in this country vary. Job satisfaction was present with most
participants of the research although not all of them were satisfied with the management methods of the company. The themes which were diagnosed are cooperation and communication, trust in the workplace, recognition for a job well done and a good manager. The results indicate that the employees have certain ideas on how a manager must be, he must take the time to train employees, get to know them and be there for them. According to those results it is a good choice for the tourism service companies in this country to adapt to the ideology of servant leadership as a method of management. The results of the study indicate that there is a further need for research in this area and can those studies serve a practical purpose for the managers of service companies who want to improve their management methods.
