Titill:
  • Hetjur og huldufólk : kostir, gallar og lykilárangursþættir tvöfaldrar stjórnunar listahátíða
Námsstig:
  • Meistara

  • Dual leadership is a management model based on an equal collaboration of two leaders, who in the case of this paper are the Managing Director and the Artistic Director of an arts festival. In dual leadership specialization and independence is neaded from the managers, but also a common vision and common goals. For an arts festival to reach artistic and operational success, managers need to have both knowledge and experience within their fields. The Artistic Director is the hero, the face of the festival and the one running the artistic vision, and the Managing Director is the hulduperson (Icelandic: huldufólk | English: hidden people/elves), the person who realizes the artistic landscape of the festival and makes sure all the nuts and bolts are in place. These two people work together towards success.
The hypothesis of this paper is that a dual leadership format is needed for art festivals, because the tasks are many and diverse and no one can be an expert in everything. To answer this hypothesis the author’s experience and knowledge was researched by the means of participatory action research methods, co-workers were interviewed and the results were compared to the literature found on the subject. The results focus on the benefits, disadvantages and key factors of success in dual leaderships of arts festivals.
