Titill:
  • Burstaormar (Liðormar) á Íslandsmiðum
  • Titill er á ensku Polychaeta (Annelida) in Icelandic waters
Námsstig:
  • Bakkalár
Útdráttur:
  • Fyrsta heimild um burstaorma á Íslandi má rekja til Jóns Guðmundssonar lærða sem lýsir burstaormum í handriti frá árinu 1640. En síðasta yfirlit yfir alla burstaorma á Íslandsmiðum kom út í hefti í safnritinu Zoology of Iceland sem kom út árið 1951.
Lykilorð: Burstaormar, Botndýr á Íslandsmiðum (BIOICE), Grænlands-Íslands-Færeyja- hryggurinn, The Zoology of Iceland.

  • Útdráttur er á ensku

The first source mentioning Polychaeta around in Iceland is a manuscript by Jón "the learned” Guðmundsson written in 1640 .The last comprehensive overview of Polychaeta around Iceland was in Zoology of Iceland published in 1951 and listed the 223 Polychaeta species known there at that time. Since then further 79 species have been found. Icelandic and international scentific journals, and databases were searched for records of new Polychaeta species.
Most of these new Polychaeta species were found in the BIOICE expeditions among them 13 species that have not been found anywhere else than around Iceland. Those expeditions also showed that the Greenland-Iceland-Faeroe ridge (GIF) acts as barrier to the expansion of some Polychaeta species. Whether this is only because of the ridge, or the different ocean conditions on either side of it, such as temperature. That might be species dependent.
The 13 specis of Polychaeta that are exclusivly found around Iceland are found considerably deeper than the species Iceland shares with the rest of the world.
Key words: Polychaeta, Benthic Invertebrates of Icelandic Waters (BIOICE), Greenland-Iceland-Faroe ridge,
