This report is a review of key environmental challenges of aquaculture salmon supply chain including an overview of salmon feed and aquaculture production and processing into fresh and smoked products. It is a part of Deliverable 1.1 in the FP7 funded SENSE project, which is aimed at giving a thorough review of different environmental impacts that the food and drink sector are generating along the whole supply chain, from farm to fork. The aim is also to assess which of the environmental impacts are key challenges for Europe. A representative range of food product has been chosen and the overall deliverable contains complementary reports on environmental challenges in supply chains of beef and dairy products and orange juice, which have been chosen as examples of food supply chains in Europe.
The report was compiled through collective literature searches in academic journals and professional reports; web‐based information; and through pre-existing knowledge and prior research activity of the writing team of this report. The report is not an exhaustive account but is intended to give a ”helicopter view” of the main environmental challenges in the aquaculture salmon value chain based on a review of LCA studies as well as providing insight to monitoring programs and environmental certification schemes for salmon production.
