Titill:

The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of commercial fishing of sandeel in Icelandic waters. Environmental, commercial and ecological aspects of the fisheries will be addressed. At the moment the sandeel population around Iceland has been at a historic low so little research has been possible in the Icelandic ecosystem. Therefore we will have to fill in the gaps with research from the North Sea and Norway. Sandeel is caught in big numbers in both of those areas and they both have similar ecosystems to the Icelandic one so we will be using them for comparison. Sandeel stocks have a natural tendency to variate greatly because they are a short-lived species and any deviation in recruitment stock promptly appears in the spawning stock. The sandeel seems to be an important link in the Icelandic ecosystem but species of fish and birds that prey on the sandeel are not all as dependant on their availability. In Iceland interest in sandeel fishing has been some in the past especially when sandeel was imported to use as bait. However, recent requests for trial fishing have been denied due to failures in past research expeditions when bycatch was always a problem. In the North Sea bycatch is usually low and not a problem. Still the sandeel fisheries have always been controversial and sometimes blamed for shortage in sandeel abundance.
