The results of the international PISA studies, have triggered concerns about the literacy of Icelandic children. The studies have revealed that the reading comprehension of Icelandic children is inferior to other nations in the study, and has declined since the studies started in
year 2000. Scholars studying the underlying causes, have revealed a significant decrease in book reading, which is believed to be correlated to reading comprehension in general. Both authorities and teachers have through institutionalized goals, tried to fight this development and highlighted as priority an increased emphasis on reading for pleasure. The causes for decreased book reading are not obvious. The thesis will look to the past and children‘s attitudes towards reading, and their reading practises will be examined with special emphasis on the impact of the arrival of television In 1968 a survey was conducted in three urban areas in Iceland: Reykjavik, Vestmannaeyjar and Akureyri. The participants were children from10 to 14 years of age. The questionnaire
covered various social factors. This thesis will only focus on the factors concerning reading and interest in reading. At the time in question the Icelandic National Television had been broadcasting for two years, but those broadcasts only reached a part of the country. Reykjavik and Vestmannaeyjar had facilities to receive broadcasting but Akureyri had not. Thus it was possible to study the impact of television on reading and children‘s interest in reading by comparing the areas that had access to television and those that did not access. Key findings revealed that not all Icelandic children were fond of reading and a large portion did not read or rarely read books. Findings also showed that television had some influence on reading behaviour and interest in reading, and that it was more likely to affect boys. The
effect was most pronounced on reading in the evenings. Even though television influenced reading, it had much more impact on other entertainment, such as radio listening. Teachers should be aware that screen entertainment has increased and stimulus caused by that has also
increased, but at the same time consider that such entertainment is not the sole reason for diminished interest in reading.
