The main objective of this research is to estimate the economic value of Icelandic sport-fishing areas in monetary terms by deriving the total benefits from the areas’ fishing licenses. The panel data sample consists of 38 salmon and trout fishing areas based all-over Iceland and rented by the Angling Club of Reykjavik over the years 2005-2008. A highly non-linear demand function is presented based on the theory of revealed preferences. Weighted average for daily licenses’ prices is calculated and implimented as a dependent variable. Explanatory variables are, average weight of catched fish, number of catched fish per fishing-rod per day, travel cost to and from area, and licenses’ utilization. Dummy variables are used to contain spatial and time effects. Weighted least squares is used to estimate the function where residual noise is minimized by iteration. The results indicate that all of the independent and some of the dummy variables significantly explain the licenses’ price development both through cross-section and over time. In numeric terms the average weight of catched fish has the highest elasticity. The hedonic prices are calculated, total benefits and the Marshallian consumer surplus from fishing licenses. The average consumer surplus, corrected for inflation, from salmon licenses is c.a. ISK13,346 and ISK2,975 from trout licenses which is relatively high compared to international results. The sum of estimated consumer surplus and real producer surplus is approximately the economic value of each fishing area which should be used to perform a cost benefit analysis involving the areas.
