Titill:
This research paper serves the main purpose of analysing how the general public as well as two groups of graduate librarians view the title of Library- and Information Scientists. The project also looks at the potential effect it might have if the name of the educational programme was widened into another term such as Information Science. Finally the paper looks at the reason why so few young people, and men in particular, find this field of interest.
The findings are based on qualitative research methods, on the one hand with open ended interviews with three secondary school students, who were considered to be representative of the general public, and on the other hand the study made use of two focus groups of four graduated librarians.
The study looked at discussions in Icelandic and non-Icelandic literature about the name as well as the image of the profession. Several papers were used as background on the image of the librarian in relation to the changes in the profession during the past few years. The paper addresses also the general professional image of the librarian as commonly perceived in society.
The findings of the paper indicate that it might be a positive move for the profession to launch a systematic promotion of the field. It might also be of benefit to change the name of the study programme and introduce a shorter name such as Information Science. Such changes could be useful in contradicting the stereotype which seems to be linked to the first part of the title Library and Information Science. These two changes might also turn out to be more attractive to young people and mail students.
