Not discussed, not existing: views on children in the general discussion on domestic violence in the printed media.
The purpose of this study has been to investigate the views on children in the general discussion on domestic violence in the printed media. The emphasis has been laid on finding out whether children and their situation was taken into consideration, and if so, how this was done. The method used in this study was discourse analysis, and the texts that were subject to analysis were gathered from three Icelandic daily newspapers and one
Icelandic magazine. The excerpted texts appeared during three equally long periods of time in the years 2005 to 2008.
The most significant result of the analysis was, that as a rule children were presented from the point of view of adults. Children did not have social agency in the discourses. They were depicted as a fairly homogeneous group and were not presented as valid individuals. The voices of children were not heard in the texts dealing with domestic violence and their experiences were not given much space. Children were first and foremost visible in connection with an adult reality. In the texts, three discourses were discerned; institutional discourse, experience discourse and enlightening discourse, and contradictions between them were exposed in the analysis. In the institutional discourse and experience discourse the view on children was homogeneous, and
they were principally looked upon as incomplete adults, who are not aware of violence in their home and are not affected by this violence. In the enlightening discourse, on the other hand, the complexity of the concept “child” was shown, and the view that children are agents in their own lives was expressed. The common factor in the three discourses was stressing the importance of breaking the silence vis-à-vis domestic violence and child abuse, and giving children adequate protection. Not much was written about children´s cultural and/or social background. Children’s age was mentioned in ca. one third of the cases where children were at all mentioned, the most common age cited was 8 to 12 years, and gender was mentioned in a little more than half of the
instances where children were mentioned. Significantly more mentions were made of girls than of boys. Fairly seldom there were references to ethnicity, domicile, daily surroundings or other factors that matter when the situation of children is discussed. The most prevalent feature in the material as regards children and violence, was that of girls that have been subject to sexual abuse. This was the most common type of violence against children mentioned in the material. Corporal violence and neglect were seldom mentioned and almost never mental violence.
