Titill:
  • „Maður þarf að fara í einhvern skóla." Hugmyndir og þekking barna á námi og störfum
Námsstig:
  • Meistara

The purpose of this research was to study the ideas and knowledge ten year old children have about education and occupations. They were asked to name occupations they wanted to have in the future and the reason for choosing those particular occupations, as well as others they are familiar with. They were also asked how they make decisions.
The research took place in a fifth grade class with twenty children in an elementary school in Reykjavík which had not received vocational guidance. The results are based on a written assignment given to the whole class in which they were asked to write down the names of the occupations they aspire to and other occupations they are familiar with. Ten children were interviewed with open ended questions.
The results show that all the children have contemplated future occupations and are all able to name their preferred one. The most aspired occupations are related to sports and arts. Interest seems to be the main reason for choosing their preferred occupations and they do not choose the same job as their parents. Some of the children seem to understand vocational preparation requirements which seem to be related to individual differences. The children are familiar with various occupations representing various occupational fields.
Most of the children have decided which school they want to attend after primary and secondary school but none of them mention technical college or apprenticeship. Results indicated that the children have only limited understanding of the connection between school subjects and the world of work and need help from their parents when making decisions.
