This thesis is examining the word formation processes of three Germanic languages: Swedish, English, and German. The thesis is looking at word creation from two perspectives: the first being the contrast between inherited words and loanwords. It discusses how to recognize inherited words in a language; details the subcategories of loanwords; gives examples in all three languages to inherited words, loanwords, and the subcategories thereof; and provides statistics on the composition of the vocabulary of the three languages with regards to the origins of their words. The second part of the thesis examines the word creation process from a morphological point of view, giving an overview and examples in the languages examined on compounding, derivation and conversion, blending, and clipping, while comparing the productivity of these word formation processes between the three languages examined.
