With increasing development of devices like tablet computers, video game consoles and mobile phones, children’s and adolescents’ screen time has been growing fast over the last years. As a result the inevitable discussion on the influence of screen time and television viewing on children and adolescents has been increasing. Results from other studies have shown association between more screen time and sleeping difficulties and decline in mental health. Results have also shown that boys tend to spend more time on average in front of the screen than girls. The objective of this study was to examine the association between screen time and sleeping difficulties and decline in mental health, as well as if there were gender differences in the screen time of Icelandic adolescents. Data and questionnaire from the international survey Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) from 2013–2014 were used. Participants in the study were a total of 3,480 10th grade students from all over Iceland. The results of this study showed that boys spend on average more time than girls in front of the screen, and that there was a significant association between more screen time and sleeping difficulties along with a decline in mental health. The results also showed that there was a significant association between more computer use and total viewing on one hand and sleeping difficulties and decline in mental health on the other. Researchers found it interesting that there was not a significant association between more video gaming and sleeping difficulties and decline in mental health. Researchers suggest and believe that it would be interesting to study more accurately the influence of video gaming with regards to social factors on sleep and mental health.
Keywords: Screen time, mental health, sleeping difficulties, gender differences, adolescents.
