The theatre play The 13th Crusade was published as a book in 1993, the same year the premier opened at The National Theatre in Iceland. The author of this play, Oddur Björnsson, was a productive theatre plays writer during the latter half of the 20th century and this was the last one of his many plays. This play was generally regarded as unusual, structurally complicated and very different from the author's previous plays. At the outset of this paper, the focus will be on the author, the theatrical performance at the The National Theatre and the play's structure which is divided into two parts called Seria and Feria. The discussion will be on the characters of the play, the threefold oneness of the human being and the threefold nature of the soul. It will especially be elaborated how the three main characters of the play seem to be at the same time one and the same person with a threefold soul. Then, the focus will switch to rituals, their nature and how they are presented within the play. These rituals include the Ordination or the Holy Path and the Mass. The discussion and the analysis of the play's themes will be influenced by scholars such as Plato, Sigmund Freud, Martin Esslin and Leonard Pronco. Furthermore, since the play is often quite religious and ritualistic, there will be several references to the Bible. The rituals within each scene of the play will be analyzed separately one by one. All the play's scenes have a particular description based on various characters, locations, progress of events and a key sentence which best describes the essence of each particular scene. Finally, the theatre of the absurd will be discussed both generally and theoretically in the context of various academics and their theories will be compared to the play with a special focus on whether or not it can be defined as an absurd theatre play.
