  • The objective of this research was to find out if dogs were allowed into accommodations and if any restrictions were applied to their stay. To get a better understanding and insight into dog facilities, interviews with 15 accommodation owner’s that either allowed or banned dogs was carried out. Nearly all accommodations allowed guide dogs.
Most farm guesthouses agreed that unfamiliar dogs with unknown behavioural patterns don’t mix well with the daily routine of the farm, and visiting dogs should be kept inside a restricted area or on a leash at all times. Dog allergy, noise irritation and hygiene were mutual concerns from all accommodation owners but very few thought of any risk to property damage caused by dogs.
There will always be a few in a large group who, through poor training and neglect of their animals, will give a bad name to all dog owners. As a result, some accommodations are reluctant to allow any dogs. When dogs are allowed to stay overnight it is considered more of a favour to encourage better behaviour. It is not uncommon for accommodation owners that allow dogs to stay, to try to keep it a secret from other guests. It seems the best solution of mixing dog and non dog owners is well designed accommodations that are built with the idea of separating visiting dogs such that they do not disturb daily chores or other guests; after all, we have to keep in mind not everyone likes dogs.
Interviews where taken with ten health inspectors over all quarters of the country to ask about the Health Regulations number 941/2002, which bans dogs from entering and staying at accommodations. None of the accommodation owners knew about the regulation but it is in the hands of the health inspectors to make sure accommodation owners follow the regulation. Accommodations that allow dogs can be found in all sectors of the country. However there has never been a case of punishment for allowing dogs. It seems that this regulation hinder positive developments that allows dogs to stay in accommodations.
Dog owners currently represent an untapped marketing opportunity.
Key words: dog, tourism, accommodation, regulation of health control.
