Abstract:
  • Abstract is in Icelandic

  • The Icelandic national curriculum guide for music schools – general section was published in the year 2000, but the section on music theory studies was not published until 2005. Music theory studies is used to refer collectively to disciplines such as the rudiments of music, harmony, aural skills and music history, these disciplines are also referred to as core disciplines and are an integral part of studying music, regardless of the student’s area of specialization.
The thesis introduces the results of a study on advanced level harmony teaching and curriculum in Icelandic music schools. The study was done over the period from January to May 2011. The topics of the study include approaches to teaching, curriculum material used and student performance evaluations in correlation with the demands put forth in the Icelandic national curriculum guide for music schools. The national curriculum describes the requirements students must meet to pass the advanced level examination, but it does not describe any controls for the education quality, it is therefore the responsibility of the individual schools to ensure that teaching and examination is in line with the demands of the national curriculum.
Teaching methods are discussed in light of education and study theories, mostly from the viewpoint of adult education, as advanced level music studies are for the most part elective studies of young adults. The results of the study indicate that teaching and performance evaluation methods are homogenous and that few schools have developed their own policy, even if the national curriculum makes room for this. Alternative performance evaluation methods are introduced which could potentially be used in music theory studies.
Harmony text books published in Iceland are explored from the point of view of curriculum development and the philosophy on which they are based. The paper discusses the attitude harmony teachers have towards those books, the overall result from using them and whether they fulfil demands made to advanced level harmony curriculum material.
