Keen is the eye of a child
The objective of this project is to report on a research with children which according to their parents are having social problems at school. In view of social constructionism theories, it sheds a light on how children perceive and interpret their social experiences in school communities. Participants are five, four boys aged 8, 10 and 13 years old and one 9 year old girl. Parents of participants came to Sjónarhóll, counseling center for parents of children with special needs, with concerns about the social welfare of their children at school and that is how the researcher of this study came in contact with the children.
The research is meant to answer the following question: What do children, who according to their parents are having social problems at school, feel and experience in their school communities? References to social problems in this research means the child's difficulties in social and communication skills in a peer group and with adults in the school. To clarify the main question of the research, details were presented under the following questions: What are the attitudes of these children to learning and schools? How do they describe their experiences and the impact of the experience on their identity?
Data was obtained through a qualitative approach where semi-structured interviews with each child were conducted. Efforts were made to get the clearest possible picture of the childrens experiences with the aim of gaining a deeper insight and understanding of how they interpret this part of their life. Results of the research shed light on the children‘s feelings and experiences of their schooling, which was affected by negativity, and significantly negative for some of them, towards the school. A great deal of anger was identified among some of the children because of communication problems with other children and teachers along with poor social status within the peer group which led them to negative behaviors that brought them often in worse communication trouble along with increased distress and more negative self-image. The interviews clearly revealed negative feeling and/or activity of the children during recess as their stories were mainly characterized by loneliness, being teased, and / or fights. Results of the research also show that most of the children succeed poorly or not at all in forming social relationships, resolving disputes, putting themselves in the shoes of others or managing to control their own behavior in situations like recess, which is for all of them tough socially in some way.
