  • What did the poorest people in Iceland write about in 1771 in their communication to the First Land Commission, a royal commission sent by the central administration in Copenhagen to investigate the situation in Iceland? What about the provincial governor, and what was he interested in conveying to the king? Letters from these people and many other inhabitants of Iceland are preserved in the archives of the two Land Commissions in the late 18th century. Furthermore, these letters throw interesting light on the economy, social structure and views of different groups of people in Iceland at the time. The First Land Commission of 1770–1771 was commissioned to meet people of all classes, put questionnaires forward to be answered in writing on a wide range of matters regarding the situation in Iceland, and receive their answers and any other observations that the inhabitants in Iceland wanted to pass on to the authorities in Denmark. The Second Land Commission 1785–1787 carried on where the previous commission left off and continued working on matters concerning Icelandic society and economy. In this article I will discuss the archives of the First and Second Land Commissions, considering them as sources to eighteenth century history, their use in historical research until now and plans towards their publication.
Keywords: View of society, general public, officials, publication of sources, the eighteenth century
