Abstract:
  • Abstract is in Icelandic

  • The aim of this study is to shed light upon womens experiences of the service in the hospitals women´s department when they are seeking abortion. A special focus of this study was to hear womens attitudes towards the facilities and access when they seek this service, how they felt about the interface and the education they got from the health workers and also to hear about their personal wellbeing after the abortion. In the beginning 138 women were offered to participate in this study, it ended with 34 participants wich gives 25% response rate. This study was performed with quantitative research method. Participants were contacted by phone a week after the abortion and asked questions with help from a pre designed questionnare. The questionnare was designed by professionals who specialize in the field of abortion, professionals like social workers, nurses and doctors. It is important to meet the need for education and counselling when it comes to women who consider to use abortion to end pregnancy and it´s important to keep in mind the vulnerable position they are in when making that decision and facing the circumstances.
The results of this study indicates that women are over all satisfied with the service they get from the hospital. 23 women (67,6%) didn´t get in contact with a social worker at the promoted hour, 18 women (52,9%) reported that the social worker did contact them back and seven women (20,6%) reported that they contacted the social worker again themselves. The majority of the women reported that they experienced support and neutrality from the health workers. Most participants got a good education about contraceptions, but only eight women (23,5%) were offered to meet with contraceptive specialist after the abortion. It is noteworthy that there was no difference in the wellbeing of women who received counselling by phone or women who got an interview with a social worker. It is believed that the number of participants in this study give certain results and indicates that those who seek abortion are a sensitive group of women.
