Title:
  • Title is in Icelandic Tannsmíðateymið. Upplýsingaflæði á milli tannsmiða og tannlækna við gerð tanngerva
Degree:
  • Bachelor's
Abstract:
  • Abstract is in Icelandic

Tilgangur: Að skoða upplýsingaflæði milli tannsmiða og tannlækna á Íslandi við gerð tanngerva. Komið hafa fram vísbendingar um meiri aðkomu tannsmiða að hönnunarferli tanngerva en fræðin gera ráð fyrir. Því verður leitast við að kanna viðhorf fagstéttanna til virkrar aðkomu tannsmiðsins að hönnunarferlinu. Með aukinni þekkingu má efla samvinnu fagstéttanna í þágu gæða útkomu tanngerva og getur það orðið til þess að aðlaga fræðilega sýn á verkferli við tannsmíði en fræðin eru oft undirstaða opinberra klínískra leiðbeininga. Leitast var við að svara rannsóknarspurningunum:
    1. Hvernig er staðan á miðlun upplýsinga með verkbeiðnum á milli tannlækna og tannsmiða á Íslandi?

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the quality of communication between dental technicians and dentists in Iceland. There is evidence that the role of the dental technician in the design of dental prostheses is larger than has been stated in academic literature. We will seek to explore the views of dentists and dental technicians on the active involvement of the dental technician in the design process. Increased knowledge makes it possible to strengthen collaboration in favor of the quality of the finished prostheses and also to adapt the theoretical view of accepted procedures which is the basis of public clinical guidelines. The research questions were:
    1. How is the quality of work orders as a means to communicate information between dentists and dental technicians in Iceland?
    2. What are the views of dentists and dental technicians in Iceland on the active involvement of the dental technician in the design process?
Methods: Quantitative methodology was used and the results published by descriptive statistics in both text and tables. Questionnaires were emailed to all members of the Dental Association (n=284) and to all members of the union of Dental technicians (n=70). Descriptive statistics were compiled from the responses by using the computer program Excel® (Microsoft Corporation). In search for literature sources, peer-reviewed journals and books were used.
Results: In total 206 participants out of 353 responded to the questionnaire, a response ratio of 58,2%. 47 dental technicians out of 70 answered, that is a response ratio of 67,1%. 158 dentists of 284 answered, that is a response ratio of 55.6%.
Conclusion: Based on criteria set out in various international studies, written work orders from dentists to dental technicians in Iceland do not meet standards. Most of the information elements important to the design of the prosthesis were accounted for in less than a third of the work orders and some as infrequently as in 4.5% of the work orders. The fact that information on disinfection of impressions was present only in 14,6% of the work orders which compromises the safety of the dental technicians. Results show that the majority of dentists and dental technicians consider the involvement of the dental technician in the design process important, taking information provided by the dentist into account. This raises the question whether it is appropriate to reassess the academic point of view based on actual practice and opinions.
