  • Fear of childbirth among pregnant women has been studied around the world, predominantly in the Nordic countries where the frequency of severe fear of childbirth is between 5 to 10%. Studies have revealed several risk factors for childbirth fear in pregnant women and proven that the consequences of fear of childbirth can be serious.
This study is part of a larger study by Hildur Sigurðardóttir, midwife and assistant professor at the University of Iceland. The main goal of the study was to analyze the psychometric properties of Icelandic language version of the CAQ (Childbirth Attitudes Questionnaire), an instrument developed by Nancy K. Lowe (2000) to measure childbirth fears and to evaluate it‘s reliability and internal consistency. Other goals of the study were to explore the object of the fear, the frequency of childbirth fear and it‘s relationship with the background variables of the participants. The instrument is a 4-point Likert scale containing 16 statements that observe anxiety/childbirth fear among pregnant women concerning factors relating to the child's health, pain, self-control, medical procedures, confidence in their own abilities, hospital environment and healthcare professionals.
The research method was quantitative and the instrument was submitted for pregnant women in collaboration with midwives operating at the Primary Health Care centers of the capital area during the period from January 17th to March 17th 2014. The sampling was convenience, which involved 200 pregnant women with a response rate of 78%. The age of the participants was between 18 to 41 years. Data were analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package in Social Science) statistical program.
The reliability coefficient Cronbach's alpha was 0.877 indicating high internal consistency and good reliability of the instrument. The majority of the participants, or 64.5% had moderate childbirth fear, 17.4% had low childbirth fear and 18.1% had high childbirth fear. The fear of childbirth among primiparous women were significantly greater than the fear of childbirth among multiparous women (p < 0.05).
The findings of the study indicates that the current Icelandic language version of the CAQ (Childbirth Attitudes Questionnaire) is reliable and can be used in the process of screening and treatment of childbirth fear. It is important to identify pregnant women with childbirth fear during pregnancy to prevent its consequences and to promote their physical, social and psychological well being.
