  • This study explores the participation patterns and environment supports and barriers for high functioning children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) within their home, school and community. Information from parents of 8 – 17 year old children with and without ASD was gathered and compared. Before the study was conducted a parent report questionnaire Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth (PEM-CY) was translated and adapted to Icelandic according to translation guidelines and general rules for adaptation. Psychometric properties of the Icelandic version of the PEM-CY were examined. This study is a part of a larger project named Quality of Life, Participation and Environment of Children living in Iceland which is conducted in cooperation with The State Diagnostic and Counselling Centre. A web based version of the questionnaire was developed and hosted on the site of the University of Akureyri Research Centre. Data was obtained from parents of 104 children in the research group and of 250 children in the comparison group. The study is based on a descriptive cross-sectional design. Additionally, significance tests and effect sizes were calculated to examine group difference in the PEM-CY summary scores. The results revealed some similarities and differences between the groups. In both groups the parents reported that their children participated to the most extent in activities at home and to the least extent in activities in the community. Across groups the parents were least satisfied with their children´s participation at home while most satisfied with their children’s participation at school. On the other hand there was a significant group difference in most summary scores and many items. Children with ASD participated less frequently, in fewer activities and were less involved than their peers. Also their parents were less satisfied with their children´s participation and were more likely to report that features of the environment hindered participation. The most common barriers limiting participation and with the largest group difference included social, cognitive and physical activity demands as well as relations with peers. Parents of children with ASD were more likely to report that resources needed to support their children’s participation were not adequate. Reliability (Cronbach’s-α) for participation frequency was low but acceptable for participation involvement and environmental factors. A significant negative correlation was obtained between desire for change score and environmental supportiveness total score. The results of the study support the fact that children’s participation is greatly influenced by environmental factors and highlight those factors that should be prioritized to enable greater participation of high-functioning children with ASD in various situations.
Key words: Participation, environment, autism, PEM-CY, parent report.
