    Grading fish in aquaculture is extremely important and its advantages are numerous. Traditional industrial grading consists of a pump, a grader and a counter. The pump transports the fish from a tank to a grader. The grader divides the fish based on its width. Next it flows through a counter which counts the number of fish in each grade separately.
    The objective of grading fish is to split the fish up by size. The aim is to get a certain percentage or biomass in each grade in order to utilize the farm to its fullest. To achieve this, the grader needs constant fine-tuning based on results from the counter. This can be difficult and time consuming and often results in an erroneous grade. Further, an efficient speed must also be found for the pump. If it is too fast, there is a risk of overloading the system.
    The objective of this M.S. thesis is to design and construct a central control system that connects the equipment used for handling and grading fish in aquaculture. The system gathers information from the equipment and uses the data to dynamically adjust the grader, and to adjust the pump according to the user's request. This system is called SmartFlow.
    This project is being carried out in collaboration with Vaki Aquaculture Systems. The project consists of designing controls for, Vaki counters, such they can be dynamically controlled by a computer and further, to assist in the design of a new grader tailored to SmartFlow. Finally, to design a central controller that integrates all the devices for grading of live fish.
