  • Intensive training in children and teenage sports is becoming more common in recent years. Studies have shown a relationship between the intensity and injuries. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of intensity on the drop out rate from sports in 10th grade, as well to see the amount of activity and sedentary behavior.
This study is similar to other studies in Iceland except she specifically looks at details such as student exercise, physical therapy, location of injury and what kind of injury the students have during a certain age. The questionnaire was answered by 84 students in three different schools in Iceland. It contained general questions, as well as questions about activity, sedentary behavior, sports involvement and injuries.
The results of this study showed that exercise intensity was one of three most common reasons for students dropping out of sports. Students who participated in organized sports were 69,0% of participants in the study. More than half of the students also believed they didn´t have a chance to practice less and without competition. Approximately 90% of the student experienced injuries and 47,6% of the students received physical therapy because of those injuries. The study also showed the more the students practiced each week the more active they were outside sports and in physical education class in school.
Participation in sports seems to have positive effects on sedentary behavior. Results also showed an association between intensity and drop out rate from sports. Therefore it is important to pay attention to the intensity in sports for children and teenagers rate to keep athletes strong and injury free so they want to continue to practice their sport.
