This assignment has its source in a lifetime desire to write fiction. It consists of a novella, Come with Me: The Coyote Has Been Howling All Night (approx. 43,500 words) and an exposition on the writing process (approx. 11500 words).
Come with Me: The Coyote Has Been Howling All Night is the story of Nunana, a woman who seeks to discover the essence of freedom and has a burning desire to help others by illuminating a path toward it. Nunana is born into slavery in Louisiana, where the cotton fields are overflowing with songs containing hidden messages and the secret language spoken by the slaves is a source of hope and strength. Once the search for freedom has led her to Late Victorian London, where she initially experiences great disappointments, the secret language of her childhood becomes a shelter for her soul and as she grows stronger it continues to enrich her life, while being influenced by a poetic language belonging to the London Underworld, as well as Cockney Rhyming Slang and the secret language that she and her lover create to shield themselves from the sting of prejudice that they encounter. Secret languages have long served as vehicles for the unsayable for countless oppressed people who have been denied their voice. As vehicles for the unsayable they have much in common with poetry, which is often born of a desire to break beyond the boundaries of language and express the inexpressible and poetry too becomes very important in Nunana’s life. In some ways this novella is an exploration of the link between art and secret languages, both of whom are vehicles for freedom.
The second part is an exposition. It is a report on the writing process, such as the choices made regarding plot, characterization, location, dialogue and perspective, as well as the inspiration and research behind writing the novella, which led me to explore secret languages, music, criminology, history, culture and the question of freedom.
