Titill:

The goal of this thesis was to explore the possibility of having students convert lecture recordings into short educational videos. A sizeable collection of knowledge, in the form of a large number of lecture recordings, is stored at the University of Akureyri. These recordings are, for the most part, not accessible to students or being utilized by them in any other way. By extracting the knowledge found in these recordings to produce short educational videos, the stored knowledge could be utilized in a manner that serves the student’s needs for educational material that is short and concise. Such educational material can both be utilized by students as a way to revise the material or as additional educational material for the teacher. The authors of this thesis embarked on a project, designed to convert the recordings of one of the courses taught at the University of Akureyri into such educational material, as a way to demonstrate the ability of students in undertaking such a project. The end product of the project was in the form of fifteen short educational videos and additional eight videos containing shortened, edited versions of the original lecture recordings. The project was based on the theories of social constructivism, which stress the students role in creating their own understanding of the material being taught and how that understanding takes place within the framework of their social reality. The authors, therefore, aimed to inject visual references to popular culture and current events into the videos as a way to create connections between the subject of the lecture recordings and the daily life of students. The project was also based on theories that concern themselves with how memory works and how we retain memories as
well as educational multimedia theories derived from them. The following report examines the authors conversion methods, the ideology behind those methods, and the theories those methods are based on.
