Abstract:
  • Abstract is in Icelandic

  • The study focuses on children with Prader-Willi syndrome and their need for highly personalized service while they are young and when they reach adulthood. It is a qualitative research study where interviews were conducted with parents of six children and adults with Prader-Willi syndrome and a social worker in the State Diagnostic and Counselling Centre. The experiences of parents raising their children and of the services they have had are made clear. Participants described how their needs have been met in various fields by professionals in the Diagnostic and Counselling Centre, with early intervention and support in schools and colleges.
The main conclusion is that parents feel that the lack of understanding the behavior of their children due to their excessive appetite, makes it uncertain if they are being sufficiently monitored. They are under a lot of pressure because careful managing of their children‘s diet rests mostly on their shoulders and to ensure that they do not fall into a vicious circle of obesity which can lead to serious health problems. Housing for the individuals with the syndrome have to take into account the special needs of those who are in some ways different from the needs of other disabled people. Parents were satisfied with the involvement and support of social workers, developmental therapists and psychologists. Parents felt that it would be good to get more support from nutritionists and support from other parents in the same situation.
