  • The Icelandic community has seen an extensive dialogue for a long time regarding the image of the various industrial trades and the problems they are facing. Such problems are entailed, by en large, in limited attendance of vocational schooling and working in such fields. This issue does not appear to have been researched to any major extent in Iceland; hence the main objective of this research is to examine the image of the various trades in comparison with the image of fields that require university education. Additionally, the goal is to examine whether the image of trade is of such nature as generating a deterring effect on those choosing their future education. Three different trades were selected in respect of the aforementioned objectives: housebuilding, hairdressing and car mechanics, and three fields that require university education: business administration, architecture and nursing. These disciplines were selected as representative and their image was measured. The research focuses both on qualitative and quantitative research methods with two critical groups and with three sets of questionnaires. Additionally, a perceptual map was used for drawing the principal conclusions in a graphic manner.
The main conclusion was that the industrial trades measured with a more negative image than the fields requiring university education. The industrial trades seemed to differentiate themselves on grounds of “grime” and were mainly linked to the terms “difficulty” and “sloppiness”. The industrial trades proved to be least linked to traits like “intelligence”, “ambition” and “respect”. It is therefore fair to conclude that the image of these trades could have deterring effects upon those selecting their fields of study. Fields requiring university education, however, showed more positive traits than negative, except for business administration which showed more negative traits in the research. Registered nurses proved to have the most positive image compared with the other fields, in fact only illustrated positive traits.
