  • Lack of exercise among children and adolescents in Iceland is of great concern and its potential impact on the public health of the nation. Increased body weight is associated with increased risk of diseases like diabetes and heart disease. The main cause of weight gain is considered an imbalance between energy intake and exercise. The objective of this study is to examine the importance of exercise, healthy eating and physical condition of young people in 10th grade in Iceland. Gender differences relating to the above listed factors were examined and it was sought to determine whether regular exercise predicted or was connected to healthy eating and BMI of the participants. Data used was obtained from the Icelandic portion of the international study Health Behaviours in School-Aged Children (HBSC) which is conducted every four years and is supported by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Participants were 10th grade students in Iceland who answered the HBSC survey in 2013/14: The questionnaire contained 112 questions on the health and living conditions of students. Exercise frequency of children outside school hours was measured along with eating habits in relation to the body mass index (BMI) in order to estimate their physical condition. The results indicate a noticeable gender difference in eating habits and BMI, but not in exercise, as both genders were similarly active. Girls report healthier eating habits, while boys drink more carbonated beverages F(1, 3468) = 207,484, p = 0,000 than girls and eat more junk food and fast food, F(1, 3459) = 80,440, p = 0,000 and have noticeably higher BMI F(1, 3278) =5,396, p = 0,020. A correlation was between exercise and both eating habits and BMI. Increased exercise predicted a decreased BMI r = -0,044 p = 0,000; and those that exercised
    most often showed poorer eating habits r = -0,119, p = 0,000, and healthier eating habits followed less exercise r = -0,114, p = 0,000.
