Title:
  • Title is in Icelandic Social comparison on Facebook : effects on state self-esteem, self-evaluation and affective states
Degree:
  • Bachelor's
Abstract:
  • Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites in the world. Since Facebook contains vast amounts of information about individuals, it is ideal for social comparison. Downward social comparison has been associated with self-enhancement, while upward social comparison has usually been associated with negative effects, such as decreased self-esteem and self-evaluation, along with changes in affect. The aim of the study was to examine these potential effects of social comparison and potential vulnerability among certain groups. A total of 59 Icelandic university students participated in the study (43 women and 16 men, mean age = 23.95 years). Participants were randomly assigned to two experimental conditions, an upward comparison condition (temporary exposure to a Facebook profile high in likes and comments) or a downward comparison condition (a Facebook profile low in likes and comments). Results revealed that participants in the upward condition experienced lower state self-esteem and lower self-evaluation than those in the downward condition. Furthermore, participants high in depressed mood experienced lower state self-esteem, lower self-evaluation, lower positive affect and higher negative affect than those low in depressed mood. Finally, results revealed that participants high in social comparison orientation (SCO) experienced lower state self-esteem than those low in SCO.
