  • The marine world is an important resource for bioactive substances due to its remarkable biodiversity. High expectations for constant developments of innovative substances have lead to increased research in this field for the last decades with the bioactive sulphated polysaccharide, fucoidan as one of the most studied bioactive compound derived from marine organisms.
    The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of fucoidan extracted from Icelandic Fucus vesiculosus. Different extraction methods were tested and a purification process was developed. Various carbohydrate analyses were performed on samples along with multiple bioactivity assays. Results were compared to the different processes used as well as to prior studies on the same compounds. Different raw materials and different extraction methods resulted in differences in yields and activities. However, all purified samples were analysed with low total phenolic compounds and high contents of fucose, the main structural component in fucoidan. This confirmed that the extraction methods and the purification process were successful in terms of extracting fucoidan polysaccharide. Results from bioactivity assays demonstrated high antioxidant activities of crude extracts due to the high amount of phlorotannins in crude samples. Purified samples however showed possible cellular antioxidant activity.
    Due to the complex structure of fucoidan, more researches are needed to further identify and confirm the characteristics of fucoidan extracted from Icelandic Fucus vesiculosus. Results of this project should give a good idea of the main characteristics of fucoidan and what the next steps are in further research in the future.
