This report is a part of the SENSE project (FP7-KBBE:288974) and deals with implementation and validation as an iterative process in the development of the SENSE tool. The report explains the protocols that were used as a framework in the pilot implementation of the SENSE tool and includes the results of functionality testing and validation carried out by LCA experts (Phase 1). The assessment when using the SENSE tool is simplified for SMEs by applying selected input data defined as Key Environmental Performance Indicators (KEPIs). The selected KEPIs contributed up to 90-95% of the environmental impacts as assessed by LCA in the three food chains studied in the project, meat and dairy, fruit juice and aquaculture. Moreover, the SENSE tool has been validated in case studies by comparing with a commercial software and showed less than 10% variation when using the same methodologies and datasets for the eleven impact categories: climate change, human toxicity [cancer effects; non-cancer effects], acidification, eutrophication [terrestrial; freshwater; marine], ecotoxicity [freshwater], land use, abiotic resource depletion and water depletion Further testing of the SENSE tool by SMEs and assessment of the deployment of the tool in external companies will be reported in D4.2
