This thesis will cover the marketing aspect of ocean produce in addition to the mackerel fishing of Iceland, Norway, Britain and Ireland over the years of 2005-2016. Negotiations between Iceland, Norway and the European Union, as well as the distribution of quotas, were also studied. The fishing techniques employed by Iceland and Norway will also be compared.
The market environment, exportation and importation of Iceland, Norway, Japan and the European Union will be examined. The critical import and export products of those countries will be given a closer look as will the different quality standards on mackerel in Japan and Europe. In particular Norway's and Iceland's exportation of mackerel to Japan and Europe will be looked at further. As will Iceland's exportation of whole frozen mackerel and its average price on the European and Japanese market.
The goal of this thesis is to gauge whether it would be more lucrative for Iceland to sell whole frozen mackerel on the Japanese market rather than the European market.
The result was that the Japanese market was more lucrative when the average price of the Japanese market is compared to the average price of the whole European market. However, when it comes to individual European countries it turns out some of them pay more for mackerel on average than the Japanese.
Key terms: Atlantic mackerel, fishing, whole frozen mackerel, average price, ISK/kg
