La novela histórica de ayer a hoy La tierra del fuego como prototipo ilustre

Abstract

AbstractThis study, conducted to complete the degree of MA in Spanish from the University ofIceland, seeks to investigate the current status of the Historical Novel as a literary genrethrough the analysis of the novel La tierra del fuego (1998), by the Argentinian novelistSylvia Iparraguirre. The main objective of the investigation is to provide an overview of thetheoretical approaches and the current standing of this genre and its sub-genre by identifyingits origin, characteristics and principal elements. Subsequently, an analysis of their literaryclassification is presented, to determine the possible need to reconsider the Historical Novelas a sub-genre of the Novel, or if instead it should be considered as a relevant literary genreon its own accord. Furthermore, a review of both sub-genres, the Historical Novel and the socalledNew Historical Novel, is offered in order to consider the possibility of merging theminto one category, or if those should be maintained separate.To conduct the study the literary narrative La tierra del fuego (Ísl. Eldlandið), firstpublished in Buenos Aires in 1998, is used as an example of a Historical Novel. In the firstpart of the study a theoretical background is established, whilst in the second part the theory isapplied to the analysis of the novel in order to obtain answers to the research questionspresented. To that aim, this research project revisits the Historical Novel and the NewHistorical Novel as literary categories and suggests their renewed categorization within theliterary genre and contemporary Latin American literature.Key concepts: Latin American Literature, Historical Novel, New Historical Novel.

ResumenEn el estudio aquí presentado, conducido para completar los estudios de maestría de laUniversidad de Islandia, se tiene como propósito investigar el desarrollo y el estado actual dela novela histórica como género literario, por medio del análisis de la novela La tierra delfuego (1998), de la escritora argentina Sylvia Iparraguirre. El objetivo principal esproporcionar información relevante a cerca del género y su subgénero, la nueva novelahistórica, identificando y representando sus orígenes, características y los elementos que losconforman. Posteriormente, se introduce un análisis de su clasificación para determinar laposible necesidad de reconsiderar la novela histórica como un subgénero de la novela, o si porel contrario, se debe considerar como un género literario propio. Para tal propósito, se ofreceuna revisión de ambos subgéneros, la novela histórica y la nueva novela histórica, para asíconsiderar la posibilidad de fusionarlos en una sola categoría o si continúa siendo necesariomantener las distinciones entre los dos.La novela seleccionada para llevar a cabo el análisis, La tierra del fuego (1998), por lotanto, se utilizará como muestra de una edición contemporánea de la novela histórica. En laprimera parte se establecerá un marco teórico, mientras que en la segunda parte se aplicarádicha teoría al análisis de la novela elegida, con el fin de obtener respuestas a las preguntas deinvestigación. Por ende, en el estudio se analiza tanto la novela histórica como la nuevanovela histórica como categorías literarias pertinentes para sugerir su ascenso dentro de losestudios literarios contemporáneos Latinoamericanos.Palabras clave: Literatura Latinoamericana, novela histórica, nueva novela histórica
