    The purpose of this research was to develop a tool that describes the organization of product innovation. The result was a prototype that consists of a process and inspection checklists. The prototype takes both exploration and exploitation into account, as the ability to innovate depends on both exploiting existing technical knowledge by further developing it, and exploring new ideas. The process describes the steps that need to be taken to map the organization of product innovation, and includes both documented reviews and interviews.
    The process is twofold, first documentation that describes the main processes within the company as well as administrative responsibilities are collected then these documents are verified by interviewing responsible employees. The prototype of the tool was tested at Össur, and it was concluded that the tool contains all the necessary elements needed to map the organization of product innovation. These results indicate that this tool can be used as a foundation for a tool that links the organization of product innovation to innovation capabilities in other sectors, both for the long and short term.
