  • Búseta Íslendinga hefur breyst talsvert frá því að gamla bændasamfélagið leið undir lok. Í dag búa 63% landsmanna á höfuðborgarsvæðinu og mörg smærri samfélög eiga á brattann að sækja. Sífellt eykst þetta hlutfall höfuðborgarbúa á meðan landsbyggðin smækkar og fólki fækkar. Grunnskólar um land allt finna mikið fyrir þessu vegna þess hve mikið börnum hefur fækkað. Í þessum samfélögum þurfa íbúarnir oftast að bíta í það súra epli að þegar börnin fara að heiman til að sækja sér framhaldsnám eða atvinnu, þá eru litlar líkur á því að þau snúi aftur heim.
Kenningar um grenndarkennslu hafa reynt að vekja athygli á mikilvægi þess að leggja áherslu á grenndina og nærumhverfi skólanna þegar kemur að kennsluaðferðum og vali á viðfangsefnum. Hugmyndir hafa lengi verið á lofti um að slíkar kennsluaðferðir geti styrkt sjálfsvitund einstaklinga og styrkt tengingu nemenda við heimabyggð sína, sem geti svo leitt til þess að meiri ábyrgðartilfinning skapist gagnvart velferð hennar.
Þetta verkefni snýst um að útskýra grenndarkennslu og svo nýta hana í þágu samfélagsins. Tekið er dæmi um verkefni sem hægt væri að gera með unglingastigi Vopnafjarðarskóla, en Vopnafjörður er dæmi um byggðarlag sem hefur þurft að þola fólksfækkun og hækkandi meðalaldur á seinustu áratugum. Einnig er komið inn á sögulega þætti þar sem byggðarsaga Vopnafjarðar er rakin ásamt skólasögunni. Verkefnin sem sýnd eru sem dæmis eru þrjú talsins og eiga að sýna það hvernig skólar geti tekið þátt í því að auka samvitund nemenda sinna.

Industrialization had a great impact on the Icelandic society and the structure of residency in Iceland. This change in industry and other employment opportunities led to a migration of people, moving from the farmers society into the towns. This migration has never stopped and is now a great threat to many small towns and communities in the rural areas of Iceland. The fact is that 63% of the population lives in the capital and surrounding areas.
The object of this essay is to explain how important elementary schools can be, in dealing with these issues that smaller communities face. The problem is that elementary schools and these societies are constantly seeing their kids move away to seek further education, that leads to a career that they pursue in the bigger cities.
To fight against this cycle a few educationalists have suggested that elementary schools should implement local studies and local teaching into their school system. That is, to focus on teaching children about their closest surrounding as they deepen their education and later learn about subjects that are further away. This ideology explains that children need to learn about their self-identity which is, in a wider perspective, also explained as collective identity. This is built on three main foundations which are historical-identity, local-identity and environmental-identity.
These ideas about local teaching are used in this assignment as tools to arrange teaching assignments for teenagers in the elementary school of Vopnafjörður, a small town in the Northeast of Iceland. The history of Vopnafjörður, and its school is then shortly explained.
The last part of the essay is a detailed plan of three assignments that take into account the ideology of local teaching. The goals explained as well as the procedure that is chosen, both in the teaching method as well as the grading.
The aim of this essay is to show how local teaching can be used in smaller schools in the hope of getting students more aware of the community and their closest surroundings, while they also seek knowledge about their identity and the identity that they share with their home, family and their close community.
