This essay is an indepth study of the roles of Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, in an attempt to answer the question whether Merry and Pippin are vital to the progress of the story. It also explores how they grow and mature, and what their roles are in terms of the story as viewed as an Epic. The essay traces the steps of Merry and Pippin through the entire text, and explores how they grow and change, and how their experiences inform their actions.
Since there has been very limited study into their roles in the story, my research relies heavily on Marion Zimmer Bradley’s essay, “Men, Halflings and Hero-Worship”, with some support in the writings of Auden, Fairburn, and other Tolkien scholars. The largest source is of course the trilogy itself.
This essay follows the progress of the two hobbits through the story, analyzing how vital their role is in the journey of the Fellowship as a whole. It explores Pippin’s role as the instigator of eucatastrophe, the sudden joyous turn of a catastrophe into a happy ending, within the Fellowship. It also looks into Zimmer Bradley’s assertion that Merry fulfills the role of the “overlooked obedient child”, while Pippin represents the “disobedient youngest child” who gets rewarded for his escapades, rather than scolded. In conclusion, the essay explores how Merry and Pippin grow from children into heroes, and act as saviors for the Shire, as a metaphor for Tolkien’s England itself, upon their return. The essay looks at how they conduct a small war of their own, to return the Shire to its former Englishness, and thus are lifted up to the status of the hero which they were deemed too small for in the war of the Big Folk.
