„Þar sem lundinn er ljúfastur fugla.“ Áhrif lundans á mótun Vestmannaeyja sem áfangastaðar

Abstract

Lundi er afar vinsæll meðal ferðamanna og er orðin ein af helstu auðlindum Íslands í ferðaþjónustu. Hann er ferðamönnum mjög hugfanginn, meðal annars vegna útlits og hátta. Lundinn er aðal aðdráttarafl Vestmannaeyja ásamt stórbrotinni náttúru og fleiru en fjöldinn allur af ferðamönnum kemur til Eyja alls staðar að úr heiminum til þess eins að sjá hann. Lundinn er þjóðartákn og einkennisfugl Eyjamanna en mikil hefð ríkir í tengslum við lundann í Eyjum. Hann hefur þar af leiðandi átt þátt í að móta samfélag og menningu Vestmannaeyja. Rannsóknarverkefni þetta snýr að lundanum í Vestmannaeyjum og er meginmarkmiðið að skoða þau áhrif sem hann hefur á mótun Vestmannaeyja sem áfangastaðar. Rannsóknin er eigindleg en til að komast að niðurstöðum voru tíu hálfstöðluð viðtöl tekin við Eyjamenn. Niðurstöður rannsóknarverkefnisins eru þær að lundinn er mjög mikilvægur í mótun Vestmannaeyja sem áfangastaðar. Margbreytileg tengsl hafa áhrif á mótunina en margt gerir það að verkum að tengslin geti raskast og þarf því stöðugt að viðhalda þeim. Markaðssetning og þau tækifæri sem eru til staðar hafa einnig áhrif á mótunina. Rannsóknin leiddi í ljós að markaðssetning lundans er af skornum skammti og því mætti nýta þau fjölmörgu tækifæri sem eru til staðar í sambandi við lundann enn frekar.

The Atlantic puffin is highly popular amongst tourists and is now one of Iceland‘s foremost resources in the tourism industry. Their increased popularity with travelers is due to their distinctive looks and behavior. Along with stunning natural beauty, puffins are the main draw to the Westman Islands; numerous tourists from all over the world flock to the Islands to see the unique puffins. The Atlantic puffin is the national bird and symbol of Westman Islanders where there is a long tradition in connection to the species. They have had a leading role in shaping the life and culture of the Westman Islands. This research paper is directed towards the puffins of the Westman Islands in order to examine the effect they have had on the Island’s development as a tourist destination. The research is proprietary with the methods used being ten semi-standardized interviews with inhabitants of the Islands. The research concludes that the puffin is of great importance to the development of the Westman Islands as a destination. Various connections to the puffins have affected the development of tourism, but many variables are in place that could break that connection. This research has uncovered that the marketing of puffins is lacking, therefore it could be possible to further utilize the many opportunities that the Atlantic puffin provides to the area.
