Fantasían í hversdagleikanum : að útskýra hið óútskýranlega

Abstract

Í þessum skrifum skoðaði ég hversdaginn og hvernig ég hef notað hann sem uppsprettu í minni listsköpun en vildi kanna hvaðan hugmyndir kæmu yfirleitt, með eigin reynslu í huga. Ég skoðaði mikilvægi fantasíunnar í daglegu lífi og leit til Werner Herzog, David Lynch og Sigurðar Guðmundssonar í þeim efnum, bar saman kenningar þeirra um hugmyndir og tengdi mitt eigið ferli við þær. Þar lagði ég áherslu á fundið efni og efniskennd, hvernig efni geta sagt sína sögu í verkum. Ég vann töluvert með sögur og kannaði virkni fantasíunnar á samfélagið sem ádeilutól og setti fram tvö dæmi, skáldsögurnar Mómó og Tímakistuna. Ég studdist við fyrirlestur Jarvis Cockers um „Hið ótrúlega“ í mikilvægi þess að nýta umhverfi sitt í sköpun og greindi eigið verk sem varð til með daglegum sundferðum, með þær hugmyndir að leiðarljósi. Út frá sögum um sköpun leiddust skrifin út í sköpunarsögur í tengslum við fyrstu einkasýninguna mína, það verk sem var farið ítarlegast í. Þar vitnaði ég bæði í fornar goðsögur sem og smásögu eftir Italo Calvino til að reyna að koma orðum að því hvernig skal útskýrum það sem við vitum ekki hvernig lítur út, hvort sem við notum til þess mál, myndir eða eitthvað allt annað.

My source of inspiration rotates around the everyday, but in this essay I wanted to explore where ideas come from with my own experience in mind. I examined the importance of fantasy in daily life and compared the theories of Werner Herzog, David Lynch and Sigurður Guðmundsson about ideas and tried to connect my own creative process to them. There I focused on the found object and how material can tell its own story. I worked alot with stories and explored how the fantasy can be used as a tool of conflict on our community and took two examples to support that theory, the fantasy-novels Momo and Tímakistan. I wrote about Jarvis Cocker's lecture „The Extraordinary“ where he talked about the importance of using one's environment in creative processes and with that in mind I analyzed an artwork of my own that was inspired by repeatedly going to the swimming pool. After writing about stories of creation I went into creation myths in connection to my first solo exhibition, the work that was analyzed most extensively. I looked into both ancient myths as well as one of Italo Calvino's short stories to try to put into words how we create something that we don't know how looks like, whether we use text, pictures or something completely different.
