The objective of this study is to examine concepts and principles of prisons architectural design in Iceland. Prisons design reflects our laws and positions towards people’s misbehavior. Prisons have a predominantly negative image to the public, which gives the idea of an undesirable place to be and hence a place for punishment. The result of this research shows that prisons’ purpose of rehabilitation is certainly the most positive outcome, rather than a severe treatment of prisoners in terms of mental and physical wellness. Human rights are therefore fundamental elements that shape prisons’ design. Therefore, prisoners’ well being is at the base for designing a healthy and safe prison. An interview with Björn Guðbrandsson a professional architect involved in the design and construction of Hólmsheiði prison in Iceland, represents the main source of information of this thesis together with: books, magazine articles, online articles, and other related to the subject.
