Degree:
  • Master's
Abstract:
  • Abstract is in Icelandic

  • This article introduces the art of crocheting and explores whether or not it has been taught in Textile Education with regards to creative applications. The research questions that have been employed are: Crochet needle and thread, which opportunities do they enable in creative studies in primary education? Has crochet always been taught in elementary schools? Should crochet be part of the curriculum, and if so, in what way?
To begin with, the history of crochet in Iceland is introduced and the role it has taken in the Icelandic curriculum, as well as in compulsory education in primary levels, is explored. In that capacity, it is discussed how crochet can be used for both personal and artistic expression.
Since creativity is one of six basic pillars of the current National Curriculum, it has been taken into consideration how the concept is defined in the National Curriculum. Furthermore, this article will discuss certain theories of scholars, such as, Anna Craft and Anne Bamford, on creativity in the school system, and Ken Robinson‘s theories on practical teaching. An attempt is made, with regards to these components, to analtyse the reason why creativity and practical teaching is important in modern education.
Digital learning materials on crochet were made based on this research. They are intended for students at the middle to final levels of compulsory education and should give them the opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to design and create their own crochet projects, with guidance from a teacher. The digital learning materials are in the form of an ebook, where the basic methods of crocheting are taught, step by
step, with texts, pictures, and videos. They teach how one can design and create unique monsters from the basic forms.
