  • In primary school I always loved social studies, I thought history was charming, geography was fun and learning about different societies was really informative. Often it seemed like I was the only one that had this interest in these subjects in the classroom. I have worked in primary school since the year 2011. I started off as an assistant but in the last 18 months I have been a supervising teacher. In those years I have only worked with kids between 10 - 12 years old. This I have done in parallel with my studies and it has helped me a lot in my education process to be in a continuous "field education". What fascinated me by social studies was the diversity. All that could be done with this big subject wowed me, but soon in my work I began to notice that the kids did not feel as fascinated as me. Student feedback and questions about why they needed to learn about this subject have been very frequent. "Why do we need to learn about some old men?" "Why do we need to learn about other countries"? "Ohh, not social science", along with a variety of expressions and slow-learning learning, are the reactions I've seen many times over these years. What is it that students do remember after 10 years of primary school? Do students really think social studies are
pointless and boring after 10th grade? I think that these are really important questions. A qualitative research method was used in the form of focus groups. The focus groups were 3 and were composed of students in 10th grade in three schools. One school is in the capital region and the other two are from the countryside. Previous studies indicated that the results would be such that students would not like social studies and that students would least like to learn this subject, as well as the social status and education of their parents would be important when it comes to their attitude to studying.
The results of this research pointed out that history is the subject in social studies that infects the field with a negative attitude. History is the subject that pops first up in students‘ head when they think about social studies and their attitude towards history is really bad. It also turns out that students feel the weight of history within social studies to be 7 too much but they see far more usefulness in teaching subjects such as life skills and geography and they find the amount of time spent on those subjects is too small. Results can not be generalized because the sample was small, but, in some respects, they support what the theory suggests.
