Psychometric properties of the Icelandic version of the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire

Abstract

When people are diagnosed with an illness they form representations of their condition. These illness perceptions affect emotional response to the illness and coping strategies of the patient. The Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (Brief-IPQ) is a nine item questionnaire used to measure illness perception. The purpose of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Icelandic version of the B-IPQ. Participants were 164 patients at Reykjalundur and Hjarta- og lungnastöðin, 120 men and 44 women (age ranging from 36 to 85 years (M = 61.7, SD = 9,6)). Patients answered the Brief-IPQ among other questionnaires before and after rehabilitation program. Two weeks later, 32 participants answered the questionnaires for the third time in order to assess test-retest reliability. The Icelandic version of the B-IPQ showed good internal reliability (α = .73). Six out of eight items had acceptable test-retest reliability, with Pearson correlations ranging from .46 to .71. Paired sample t-test indicated that all items but one (timeline) were sensitive to change. Concurrent validity was demonstrated by correlating DASS subscales to the items on the Brief-IPQ. Further data analyzing is needed to confirm good concurrent and discriminant validity. Results provide insight into illness perceptions of people with heart disease and the effect a four-week treatment can have on them.Keywords: Illness perception, BIPQ, psychometrics

Fólk skynjar sjúkdóminn sinn á mismunandi hátt en þessi skynjun getur haft áhrif á tilfinningaleg viðbrögð við sjúkdómnum og bjargráð einstaklingsins. The Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (Brief-IPQ) inniheldur níu spurningar og mælir upplifun eða skynjun fólks á veikindum sínum. Tilgangur rannsóknarinnar var að meta próffræðilega eiginleika Brief-IPQ í íslenskri þýðingu í klínísku úrtaki. Þátttakendur voru 164 sjúklingar á Reykjalundi og Hjarta- og lungnastöðinni, 120 karlar og 44 konur (aldur frá 36 ára til 85 ára (M = 61.7, SD = 9,6)). Þátttakendur svöruðu Brief-IPQ ásamt öðrum listum fyrir og eftir fjögurra vikna endurhæfingu. Tveimur vikum eftir útskrift svöruðu 32 þátttakendur listunum aftur. Brief-IPQ í íslenskri þýðingu hafði góðan innri áreiðanleika (α = .73). Sex af átta spurningum höfðu ásættanlegan endurprófunaráreiðanleika, þar sem Pearson fylgni var frá .46 til .71. Parað t-próf sýndi fram á að allar spurningar nema ein (tímalína) væru næmar fyrir breytingum. Fylgni milli undirkvarða DASS og spurninga á Brief-IPQ var notuð til að sýna fram á samleitniréttmæti. Tvær spurningar (tilfinningar og áhyggjur) höfðu góða fylgni. Frekari úrvinnslu er þörf til að meta betur samleitni og aðgreiningarréttmæti listans. Niðurstöður veita innsýn inn í upplifun hjartveikra á veikindum sínum og þau áhrif sem fjögurra-vikna meðferð hefur á upplifunina.Lykilhugtök: Illness perception, BIPQ, próffræði
